Shane Norrie was born in 1978 in
Ingersoll, Ontario where he began working with clay at the age of
16. Since then, he has continued to experiment with various methods
of pottery making and has developed a distinct style. Both his peers
and patrons showed immediate acceptance of his work and he has had
many achievements early in his career. He currently shows his work
at many respected galleries, including ongoing representation at the
prestigious Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art in Toronto, The Art
Gallery of Ontario, and MacKenzie Art Gallery in Saskatchewan. In
April of 2005, he was invited to participate in an exhibition in
Luxembourg, with 3 other Canadian Ceramic Artists. The Exhibition
included artists from New York, Australia, and Hong Kong. In August,
2005, he participated in the International Chawan Exhibition,
sponsored by the Japanese Embassy in Belgium, alongside ceramics
artists from all over the world. (Five were invited from Canada) He
is frequently participates in solo and group exhibitions throughout
Canada. He has been published in many magazines and books including
the Australian magazine, ‘Ceramics Art & Perception’, The American
magazine, ’Clay Times’, and most recently he has been included in
the book, ‘Treasures of Ontario’. The Shane Norrie Art Scholarship
was created in 2004 at his former high school to honour a graduating
student pursuing visual art related studies.
About his work, Shane says:
"Although I experiment with many different types of clay, glazes,
and firing methods, my interest is in surface effects and textures.
I love glazes that are transformed by the kilns and firing
processes. I strive to create pieces that have a sense of
timelessness and mystery."
